Back-to-School Safety Inspections: Seeing It Is Not Verification

Back-to-school safety inspections are an important part of preparing science laboratories, STEM spaces, CTE classrooms, shops, athletic areas, and other instructional environments for students and staff.
But there is one mistake schools should avoid:
Do not conduct the inspection solely by looking.
Seeing a safety control is not the same as verifying that it works.
A gas shutoff may be present.
An electrical emergency cutoff may be mounted on the wall.
A machine guard may be nearby.
A fire extinguisher may be hanging in place.
But the key question is not simply, “Is it there?”
The better question is:
Does it actually perform its intended safety function when needed?
Presence Is Not Performance
A safety system that does not work can create a false sense of security.
Consider the difference between these two statements:
“The emergency gas shutoff exists.”
“The emergency gas shutoff was accessible, clearly marked, tested according to district procedure, and staff know when and how to use it.”
Those are not the same level of safety.
The same applies to electrical cutoffs, machine guards, fire extinguishers, emergency showers, eyewashes, fume hoods, ventilation systems, PPE, and other safety controls.
A checklist that confirms equipment is present may be useful.
A checklist that verifies function, access, training, and corrective action is stronger.
What Should Be Verified?
Before staff and students return, schools should verify that:
Emergency gas shuts off.
Electrical emergency cutoffs function.
Machinery stops as intended.
Guards are installed and secured.
Fire extinguishers have current inspection evidence.
Access to shutoffs remains unobstructed.
Teachers know where the controls are.
Controls can be reached during an emergency.
Each of these items matters because emergencies rarely unfold under ideal conditions.
If a teacher cannot reach the shutoff, the shutoff may not be effective.
If storage blocks the emergency control, the control may not be available.
If a guard is removed, loose, or sitting nearby, it is not performing its function.
If a fire extinguisher is present but not inspected, that creates another question for follow-up.
If staff do not know where controls are located or when to use them, the system is incomplete.
The Role of Documentation
Documentation matters, but it must reflect reality.
A signed checklist should not imply that a system works if no one tested it, inspected it, or confirmed access.
A stronger inspection process records:
What was inspected
Who inspected it
How it was verified
What deficiencies were found
What interim controls were put in place
Who was assigned responsibility
When correction was completed
Who physically verified closure
That last step matters.
A work order is not the same as a completed correction.
An email is not the same as a repaired system.
A verbal assurance is not the same as physical verification.
The Standard of Care Connection
In my book, The Standard of Care in STEM Education: A Practical Guide for Teachers and Administrators, I emphasize that school safety is not simply about having policies or equipment.
It is about reasonable and prudent action.
This connects directly to several duties within the Standard of Care.
The Duty to Maintain requires schools to keep equipment, spaces, and safety systems in working condition.
The Duty to Warn requires foreseeable hazards to be communicated.
The Duty to Take Precautions requires reasonable steps before an incident occurs.
The Duty to Enforce requires that safety expectations are actually followed.
A school cannot assume a safety control is effective just because it exists.
It must be inspected, accessible, understood, corrected when necessary, and documented.
Practical Leadership Action
Before the school year begins, choose one science laboratory, one CTE or technology area, and one maintenance or instructional equipment space.
Walk the room with the person responsible for the space.
Ask:
What could go wrong here?
What safety system is supposed to protect people?
Does that system work?
Can it be reached quickly?
Does the teacher or staff member know how to use it?
What evidence shows that it was inspected?
What happens if it fails?
Who documents and verifies the correction?
These questions move a school beyond a visual walkthrough and toward a functioning safety system.
Final Thought
Back-to-school safety inspections should not be about checking boxes.
They should be about verifying readiness.
Seeing it is not verification.
Test it.
Document it.
Correct it.
Confirm it.
