Start the School Year with Sound Safety Habits

As a new school year begins, science and STEM classrooms come alive with curiosity and hands-on exploration. With this excitement also comes responsibility: establishing sound safety habits from day one.

  • Goggles are non-negotiable. Enforcing proper eye protection isn’t about rules—it’s about building a culture of safety. Goggles protect against unexpected splashes, reactions, and debris. Students quickly learn that goggles must be on before materials are distributed.

  • Model good behaviors. Teachers and staff set the tone. Simple habits—like tying back long hair, wearing appropriate shoes, knowing where the safety equipment is, checking the engineering controls, and cleaning up after each activity—go a long way in creating safe learning environments.

Consistency builds culture. The earlier you set expectations, the more they become second nature. Just as practicing fire drill routines ensures students know what to do without hesitation, consistently practicing lab safety does the same.

The start of the school year is the perfect time to reaffirm that safety is not an afterthought—it’s the foundation of effective learning. Build these habits now, and they will carry through the entire year.
