Summer Break Is Not a Break from Science Safety

Be safe in the summer too!!

Even during the quieter summer months, the importance of maintaining strict science lab safety protocols remains critical. A recent incident at a Massachusetts high school reminds us why.

According to Campus Safety Magazine, both a student and a teacher were injured during a summer chemistry program due to a lab fire. This tragic event underscores a vital lesson: science safety cannot take a vacation.

Summer programs are often staffed differently, sometimes with visiting instructors, less oversight, or a more relaxed atmosphere. But the same hazards exist—flammable chemicals, ignition sources, and experimental unpredictability. Without strict protocols, up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS), proper training, and emergency preparedness plans, the risk of injury or worse becomes very real.

At Kevin Doyle Consulting, we remind all districts: summer learning programs must meet the same high standards of lab safety as the regular school year. Train all staff. Audit facilities. Review procedures. Science doesn’t stop—and neither should your vigilance.

Stay Safe. Stay Smart. All Year Long.
