Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries power nearly everything in our lives—phones, laptops, smartwatches, e-bikes, and more. While incredibly useful, they also pose serious risks if they fail.
Are you prepared to recognize the signs of battery failure—and respond safely?
✅ Prevention Starts with AwarenessBefore using any Li-ion-powered device, read and follow the manufacturer’s safety recommendations. Most failures result from:
Overcharging or using incorrect chargers
Physical damage to the battery
Exposure to high temperatures
Poor storage practices
⚠️ Warning Signs of Battery FailureBe alert to the following signs that a Li-ion battery may be compromised:
🔥 Overheating
📦 Swelling or expansion
🚨 Odd noises (hissing, popping)
👃 Strong or unusual smells
🎨 Discoloration
🧩 Change in shape or structure
🪫 Leaking fluid
🏃♂️ If You Notice These Signs:
Stop using the device immediately.
Evacuate the room or space.
Contact a building administrator, manager, or safety officer.
Wait for a trained professional to assess the device.
🔥 If the Battery Is Smoking or on Fire:
Exit the room immediately.
Activate the fire alarm.
DO NOT attempt to put the fire out.
Li-ion battery fires escalate fast and release hazardous gases. Your priority is safety—When in doubt, get out.
