Charger Compatibility Should Be a Purchasing Question

A charger that fits is not automatically a charger that belongs.
As schools and organizations purchase more rechargeable equipment, charger compatibility needs to become part of the purchasing, safety, and documentation process. This is especially important as Li-ion-powered products continue to expand across school settings, including STEM classrooms, robotics programs, makerspaces, CTE shops, technology offices, transportation areas, athletic programs, and after-school activities.
In a recent Federal Register notice, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission proposed a safety standard for Li-ion batteries used in micromobility products and their electrical systems. The proposal addresses hazards such as thermal runaway, fires, explosions, gas release, burns, overheating, and smoke inhalation.
One important safety issue discussed in the proposal is charger compatibility.
CPSC specifically proposed adding a reverse-polarity test to reduce the risk of injury by preventing damage to battery packs caused by an incompatible charger.
That message matters for schools.
The Plug Is Not the Safety Standard
Too often, charger replacement becomes a matter of convenience.
The device needs power.
A charger is nearby.
The plug fits.
The device starts charging.
But a physical connection does not prove compatibility.
Before purchasing, replacing, or putting a charger into service, schools should consult the manufacturer’s recommendations for approved chargers. The charger should match the specific device, battery, voltage, current, connector requirements, and manufacturer guidance.
This matters because the charger, battery, battery-management system, and device should be treated as one safety system.
When one part of that system is replaced with an unapproved or incompatible part, the risk can change.
Charging Is a High-Risk Moment
The CPSC proposal also included important incident data. In the analysis cited by CPSC, over 50% of identified micromobility battery incidents occurred while the product was plugged in and charging.
That should get the attention of school leaders.
Charging is not just a routine operational task. It is a risk-management moment.

Are the voltage and current requirements correct?
Was it purchased through an approved source?
Is the charger documented with the equipment?
Are staff prohibited from using random, aftermarket, or personally supplied chargers unless approved?
Is there a process for removing damaged or questionable chargers from service?
Do staff check charging areas for heat, swelling, odor, damage, or other warning signs?
Do staff know what to do if a device overheats, smokes, hisses, leaks, or changes shape?
These questions belong in purchasing procedures, technology procedures, STEM safety plans, transportation plans, and makerspace expectations.
The School Safety Connection
A charger problem is not only a technology issue.
It can become a classroom safety issue, a transportation issue, a facilities issue, a student activity issue, or an emergency response issue.
That is why you should address charger compatibility before making a purchase and before placing the device into service.
This is especially important when devices are purchased through multiple pathways, including district purchasing, grants, donations, clubs, teacher purchases, parent groups, or online marketplaces.
If a device enters the school, the charger enters the safety system.
Standard of Care Connection
The Standard of Care is not limited to what happens after an incident.
It is built through reasonable and prudent decisions before an incident occurs.
Charger compatibility connects directly to several safety duties:
Duty to Instruct: Staff need to know that the correct charger matters and that a charger should not be substituted simply because it fits.
